The Toyota RAV4 is a mid-size 5-seat SUV, which is available in both two and four-wheel drive forms. The latest generation, is larger and more spacious than ever before.
Apart from its overall practicality, comfort and excellent technology features, the RAV4 stands out in the crowded SUV market thanks to the availability of full hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
This generation of RAV4 can only be found with a hybrid powertrain, one of which is a full petrol/electric hybrid, the other is a plug-in hybrid. Key stats:
- 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid: front-wheel drive, 215bhp, 50.4mpg
- 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid: all-wheel drive, 219bhp, 48.7mpg
- 2.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid: all-wheel drive, 302bhp, 46-mile electric-only range, 282mpg
Front-wheel drive RAV4s are the cheapest to buy and run, all-wheel drive versions give you that extra bit of traction while plug-in hybrid variants – which are reasonably expensive to buy – offer superb performance and efficiency. All RAV4s of this generation are equipped with automatic gearboxes as standard; there’s no manual option.
Towing enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the all-wheel drive variant has a braked towing capacity of 1,650kg, whereas front-wheel drive models can only manage 800kg. Plug-in versions can tow up to 1,500kg.
